Acupuncture & Cupping

Acupuncture is most beneficial in regulating your nervous system as a postpartum mom. This will help the body regain hormonal balance, reduce anxiety, treat depression, regulate cortisol levels, enhance immune functioning and milk production, improve recovery speed, and reduce pain and inflammation throughout the entire body.

Cupping is a Chinese medical bodywork technique that profuses the muscles with fresh blood and oxygen to reduce inflammation and pain. This is done through the suction of superficial tissue off the muscles layer through the use of heat and glass cups. It feels similar to a deep tissue massage and is particularly useful for the postpartum stiff neck that commonly arises during breastfeeding.

Medicinal Herbal Blends

This is one of the most potent tools in the Mother Medicine offerings. Chinese herbs can be used to recover from birth and postpartum blood loss, greatly improve milk supply, prevent or treat mastitis, regain hormone regulation, correct postpartum incontinence or constipation, improve sleep, digestion, mental health, and energy. Chinese herbal remedies can also be blended to support mom’s with a more complex or specific set of symptoms.

Mental Health Support and Prevention

Perhaps most importantly is the use of all of our wellness modalities to prevent postpartum mood and depressive disorders. The transition into welcoming a new baby into your life is a difficult time, despite its many joys. At Mother Medicine we believe carving out time for regular nourishment, wellness, and self-care amidst the growing responsibilities of motherhood provides a protective shield against many mental health concerns. Research shows the benefits of acupuncture and Chinese medicine in the treatment of postpartum mood disorders. Additionally, research shows that cultures with strong social supports and less isolation have virtually no rates of postpartum depression. Regular visits from a non-judgmental and compassionate presence, such as the Mother Medicine doula, can safeguard many moms against anxiety and depression postpartum.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Touch

Biodynamic Craniosacral touch (BCT) is a gentle yet profound whole body restoration. BCT is a non-invasive, non-manipulative modality. The biodynamic practice of craniosacral work is specifically an approach of non-doing. The purpose is to hold space for the mothers’ innate ability to heal. Often the brain waves of the client will match that of our brain waves during the most restorative points of sleep - a much needed state for new parents. This non-invasive technique can also be beneficial for new babies - especially for babies born with any cranial or neck distortions, or possible birth trauma.

V-Steam (Yoni Steam)

A “V-Steam” is an herbal vaginal steam similar to a sitz bath. Traditional Eastern and African cultures, use the warm steam of herbal blends to help heal and recover the vaginal tissues in postpartum. This is one of the most grounding services provided through Mother Medicine, as it allows solo time for mom to reconnect with her birthing canal in a warm, safe, and comforting way. Postpartum v- steaming can help prevent infection, reduce postpartum bleeding, restore prolapse, and encourage healing of the uterus and vaginal tissues. Excitingly, recent clinical evidence is also showing quicker recovery in the rejuvenation and satisfaction of for your sex life post babies arrival with the use of regular postpartum v-steams.

Derived from Indian Ayurvedic medicine, this herbal infused warm oil massage is used to revitalize and heal the mother after delivery. Every part of your body, mind, and spirit will feel rejuvenated through the course of Abhyanga. This practice will tonify your digestive and reproductive organs, improve skin elasticity, reduce muscular tension and provide a sense of well-being. Mother Medicine also uses this traditional massage technique to honor the transition from an open to a closed womb space. This intentional use of Abhyanga creates a sacred sense of closing the chapter on pregnancy as you step into motherhood for each baby born.

Infant Massage

Touch is an innate need for us all, and infants are particularly receptive to it’s healing and protective qualities. Studies have found that infant massage can increase immunity, balance cortisol levels, decrease gas and colic, increase joint flexibility, improve muscle strength, and encourage confidence and trust with mother and other caregivers.
